Review is for burgers only: they are OK. Nothing special at all. Super friendly staff, quick service, cool atmosphere. If go again, would go for breakfast and coffee. Other in party got breakfast, and quite jealous of it: it looked AMAZING!

3.5stars?... still thinking Dives bars are great, mix in breakfast foods and some Asian flair and you get Big Ed's. This place has the grunge of a small locals college bar with a decent sized food menu to fulfill the appetites of a pre or post football game celebration. A place to refill the stores after an intense exam. Or to just simply enjoy a bowl of ramen and a stein of beer. Ive been told that you can get a decent Bloody and if you know Utah that's a rare find unless you're willing to go up the canyon for it. I was told by a non-asian friend of mine that they did homemade ramen here. Unfortunately that was not the case, they just served up higher quality store bought ramen with some extra fixings. But for the price you really can't complain. So come here if you like dives, cheap food and a great atmosphere. Be aware this place is smaller, so I can only imagine what this place is like on game day or during lunch hours. 3/2014 update: So I got the GAWD afwul this time around for lunch and it was certainly a pile of food. It came out fast shortly after order. Personally I like my hashbrowns crispy so I may not choose to order this again. I will see if this is an option, but it was worth the order. Lunch time was busy as expected, but it was pretty easy to get a seat at the bar.

Big eds is on point, double roundhouse and shocker for hangover cure. When you go ham, mom takes care of you!

I was a little skeptical about this place, but shortly after we sat down that changed. This place was quirky, and had such a variety I didn't know what to get! Their potstickers are so good, and my boyfriend loved their French toast. Cute little family establishment and a homey atmosphere! We will be going back regularly for sure!

A "hidden" gem for college students. If you didn't go to the University of Utah or work nearby, chances are, you probably don't know about it. I frequented Big Ed's at least twice a week when I was in school. Don't worry, my waistline paid for it. Are you going to get healthy food here? Definitely not. Will you get something greasy and delicious, hell yes. Linda the cook, affectionately known as "mom" to regulars, knows how to make a mean plate of food. Breakfast items, burgers, salads, random Asian dishes, and then there's beer. I tend to go with the Gawd Awful: a heaping pile of perfectly cooked hashbrowns with an egg on top, smothered in chili, cheese and fresh diced onions. Can I get an "amen?" I am not cool enough to handle a full plate so I stick with the half order and it is plenty of food. I love the divey ambiance with dark wood, no windows, and pictures of patrons all over the walls. Will you find my picture once or twice? You bet. It's like Where's Waldo up in this joint.

Love this place. And, I know this is weird probably an Asian thing, but they're Chinese! Mandarin to be exact. The family ownedness is awesome, with the son waiting and the father behind the counter and mother cooking. I had to get the gawd awful (half). It did not disappoint. And the price was amazing. The full is seriously huge. I can eat, and even I probably couldn't finish that baby. Great to split with two though. I don't know how I went to the U for so long without trying this place. Beer on tap, perfect little place to grab a bite. If they were open late I'd love to come here to sober up instead of Bayleaf. The prices are unbeatable and the service is excellent. Water and coffee never went dry and my wallet was happy to boot.

GAWD AWFUL is where it's at! Only thing I have ever ordered and ever will due to it's pure deliciousness...along with a coffee and beer of course. YUM!

Thanks to Yelp reviews, my husband and I had breakfast at Big Ed's. We will go back and I would like to try lunch next time. Good food! The only downside is the parking but worth it the walk.
(4)Kyle K.
Crazy cheap cheeseburger. Gawd Awful plate that will cure you of any hangover. Plus, it's really good people watching -- the dance team members who pretend to be frilly but just want to chow down on burgers. The grad students debating sci-fi. The regulars who just want some attention. The bartender who's somehow just admitted to a roomful of strangers that she's on probation. The decades of memories contained in walls full of pictures. Mom yelling It's just a place you're glad exists.
(5)Matt R.
This place is awesome! My family and I dropped in for breakfast on a road trip this summer and are glad we did. I'll admit that I had to "stick my head in" before getting the family out of the car. The outside may look at little sketchy, but it's just character; after eating there you'll understand. The food was great. The staff outstanding. They are very polite and familiar.
(5)Lizzie W.
It's gross and it's grungy and it clearly appeals to a target market. The poor, starving college kids who want to enjoy a beer in a dark musty room without being harassed. The staff is friendly and mom is an angel. The food is always quick, cheap and hits the spot. Look for what it is, cheap breakfast food it's nearly unbeatable. The parking is horrific and coming out into the daylight is never a great experience, but I love Big Ed's regardless.
(5)Sky T.
You can't beat a simple n' freshly made cheeseburger reminiscent of a backyard barbeque and fries for under $5.00. There really is nothing super special about the cheeseburger, but if you just want a plain don't--eff--with--mah--cheezburger type of cheeseburger at an extremely affordable price then definitely hit up Big Ed's after finals. Maybe with a beer or two. I like this place because it has attitude. The sanitation is iffy, but hey, nothing Germ-X can't fix. Oh, and this place makes me want to ride a motorcycle. Yeah! Recommendation(s): Cheeseburger n' fries n' a beer.
(3)Charles S.
Big Ed's is a CLASSIC! I loved it when I was a U student and I love it now! It's cozy, to say the least. sometimes you have to share a table with strangers because there's no room left. But it's cool becuase no D-Bags know about this place. The food is good too. I recommend a bacon cheeseburger or ANY BREAKFAST item(s). See you there!
(4)J M.
There are a lot of places that serve the same food and charge $3-4 more per plate. So maybe if you need a special carafe for syrup, Pete's coffee, and a fake, hipster, ironic tattooed server.... Go else where. Big Eds is honest food, unpretentious, amazing value, and a place for friends.
(5)Jeremy F.
Since I am a graduate student going to the University of Utah, I am always in search of new spots to take the load off of studying or writing a paper. Big Ed's is close to my heart. Though I would not rate the food the best in class, this place is very unique and it does serve beer right off of campus. This tiny restaurant is where many locals and university staff come to eat and drink around lunchtime. They have a $2.95 burger and fries special, but I always get a breakfast item, the spicy chicken ramen soup, or a chili burger. Surprisingly, they have quite a large number of beers available in on tap and the bottle for the size of the place. The restaurant is family owned has been there for a while. The staff is generally friendly and know their customers. When I need to grab a bite to eat and perhaps a quick brew with friends, I turn to Big Ed's. It is also good for football games, but make sure to get there early because it fills up quick. Also, the wifi from the Kinko's next door works in Big Ed's which is a big plus for students. This quaint restaurant is a great find near the university.

with a name like big ed's, you know it's going to be greasy, and if you can't handle grease, don't go. but if you CAN handle grease, GO!!! i saw plates of stuff flying out of the kitchen that ought not to be consumed in one sitting by anyone over 40. and if that stuff doesn't kill you, the gawdawful will. it's like chili cheese fries infused with fist paralyzer. anyhow, i can't even remember what i ate, but it was a burger, and it had some kind of salsa and cheese on it. gas. enough said. actually TMI. sorry. overall: B this restaurant represents its name quite well. you'll feel like big ed when you get home.

This has got to be one of the best dives in Salt Lake. The walls are covered in layer after layer of old posters, there are two hefty doors you've got to pull open in a cramped space before you even get into the place. Then you're greeted by a cash register where they sell beer out of a fridge and cigarettes behind the counter. Take a seat in the tiny windowless room and gaze at the partially lit strands of icicle holiday lights. The menu is breakfast-food heavy, but you've also got a fair selection of burgers and then some random items. As I mulled the menu I knew immediately I would have to order the GAWD Awful - hash browns and eggs covered in chili with cheese and onions. As long as I was tempting fate I figured I'd go with the full plate ($6.75) and not the half. Hours later I'm still thinking about that pile of food, for better or worse. I would expect nothing else than that kind of dish at this joint. I also tried the potstickers and they were exactly what I expected. Burgers looked good too. Don't come here and complain about the food. You're missing the point. I don't know how often I'll be back because the students at the U of U will be back from spring break and tend to pack the place, but I'm glad I chased my appetite down this hole in the wall!
(5)Dave K.
Great little hole-in-the-wall place to relax and grab a beer after a big exam in president's circle. Food is great, atmosphere is great - it's really just a good place to relax with good friends. Some random points: They've got Baba on tap here. I'm actually not a fan of the potstickers, unlike most people. And coming from a Chinese family, I eat potstickers all the time.
(4)Remi B.
It's as good as it get's when it comes to value. It's really well priced. You won't find many better deals. The food is a lot better than what you pay for. Service is friendly and atmosphere is really nice. Good place to go hang out.
(5)Andrew W.
Inexpensive food. Nonchalant service. Satisfying comfort flavour. This joint got me through the leanest of my years at the U. Great experience. My mother and I ate there on graduation day as one last hurrah before leaving. Thanks for the memories!! I used to live around the corner and go all the time!
(5)John F.
Can't go wrong here! Great diner food with a quirky, personal touch. I get the "GAWD Awful" every time -- a pile of hashbrowns blanketed in bacon & eggs, all topped with beefy chili, onions, and cheese. Very affordable, tasty, and friendly! Support local mom & pop shops like this! And get a delicious local Uinta Golden Spike or other beer ON TAP while you're at it! :D
(5)Joey P.
Great breakfast specials! Terrific bacon! I love the atmosphere as well. It always makes me think of Moe's Tavern (if Moe sold breakfast.) "You're not thinking getting rid of the 'dank', are you Moe?"
(4)E.M. B.
Dear Ed's, I love you.
(4)Lori I.
We went to Big Ed's before the Banff Film Festival at Kingsbury Hall -- my husband had eaten there before and really wanted me to try it...now that I've been, I believe he just really wanted me to see it. I had a burger with soup (the beef vegetable soup was delicious and had I tasted that first, I would have simply ordered a really large bowl of it) -- the burger was fine. the fries were fine. If you want a really big PBR (why?), a burger, a change of scenery (to take you back to your own college days), then Big Ed's is probably a good choice. The food is fine, the service is very good, and you can watch sports -- who needs more than that for 20 bucks?
(3)Sam S.
Decent food for cheap. Big Ed's is a popular destination for college students with its cheap food and diverse menu. I've only eaten once for breakfast and the food was good. The place has been around for decades and has a lot of character. Fun place to eat if you prefer character over chains.
(3)Kendra C.
A u of utah classic. Mom will make sure your pitcher is filled and bring you platefuls of her amazing deep fried potstickers and you'll love every artery-clogging bite. This place feels like my other living room.
(4)Maggie P.
This place is definitly you hole in wall eatery. It's a family run business; son is your waiter and mom is you cook! can't get any better than that. The breakfast is my favorite and I can't get enough of their jam for my bread. The prices are great and they cant be beat for the amount of food you get.
(4)Nick B.
Big Ed's is the ultimate college greasy spoon, run by "Mom," whom everyone loves. Any day I got out of the PAB, PTC, or West Institute and the weather was snowing and blowing, I'd head on over to Big Ed's for a cup of beef burgundy soup, and maybe half of a "Gawdawful," which is a fantastic monstrosity of hash browns, eggs, cheese, and chili. A couple spoonfulls of the truly peppery hot and sour soup will blow a stuffy nose to kingdom come. It's also one of the few places right near the campus where you can have a pint, though it's only beer -- probably a good thing, if you're trying to finish a term paper. Any trip to Big Ed's comes with the caveat that the cleanliness is not up to par, although most horror stories are exaggerated over time. The ambiance inside is a bit odd and kitschy, a bit Route 66-meets-Christmas. And I wouldn't have "Mom" decorate it any other way. To go to the U without decompressing at Big Ed's is to miss The College Experience.
(3)michelle l.
love this place!!! MOM is super nice!! l love her!!
(5)Scott S.
Stop in the local UofU hangout and say hi to mom. This local dive has heartache breakfasts, quick burgers, Linda's great soups, and $2 24 oz. PBR's. You may even run in to a balloon pilot named Crash.
(4)Daphney B.
Right across from U of U, this is a MUST stop in every time I am in SLC. "Mom" and her family are extremely friendly. There are no windows, but that means it is hidden from the passer-byers who don't know of the gem. This is the type of joint that you can have a tall can with your breakfast (and I do recommend breakfast). FYI: Don't park in the back when it's busy-you won't be able to get your car out.
(4)Jessica S.
Cheeseburger and chips for $2.95, how can you beat that? Plus, below the ordering counter were tall cans of Budweiser and PBR stacked about 4 ft high. . .I knew I was in heaven :) Would've loved to try the breakfast, but I was only in SLC for work and didn't have much time. I'll try it on my next visit.
(4)John B.
Great place to eat...grab a cup of coffee or pound some beers with the regular crowd. The food is great, but it's the people that make this establishment shine.
(5)Scott R.
All I can say is dirt cheap, greasy and huge portions. That is the only way I can describe this place. If you are in the mood for that? It will not disappoint in any way. I had the Gawd Awful breakfast. It was a pile of hash browns, eggs covered with chili and cheese. Yeah I was beyond full when I left. I will definitely go back, I will just make sure I hit the gym hard before hand.
(4)Matt S.
All the food is great, you can't go wrong. Definitely try the pot stickers
(5)Alexis K.
Ma and Pa diner that is great for all ages. You cannot go wrong with the food here, its cooked by "MOM" who is an amazing little Asian lady who takes her food and service seriously! Very personable place with great people all around you. Its
(4)Cole X.
I pretty sure this place is as old as my parents. The ace is old school fabulous and the dining experience with the owner aka mom, is worth it. Do it. Breakfasts are simple and worth it
(4)Cori L.
If you're in the mood for a burger with no frills then this is the place for you. I wasn't super impressed with the food or the restaurant but it was a better burger than your typical fast food joint. Plan on walking too, this place has pretty much no parking.
(3)Alan M.
I like the cheeseburger and fries special. It's cheap and the burger is juicy and peppery with fresh toppings.
(4)James G.
Love their chili burgers..
(4)Amy W.
Awesome prices, great, fast service, and the best garden burger I've had in all of Utah. I can't speak for any of their other food besides that, but this the the first even decent garden burger I've had in Salt Lake and it far far surpassed all the crummy ones of the past!
(5)John C.
Great omelette! I didn't have the guts to try the Gawd Awful, though it looked really good, maybe next time. Service was excellent and our food was served very fast. Menu was very diverse, with many unique items. Location is easily accessible right off the campus of the University of Utah, near President's Circle. Go Utes!
(4)Matthew B.
Good omelette! Guy next to us ordered the Gawd Awful and that looked amazing. Quick, friendly service. Limited seating so plan during off busy hours.
(4)Bonnie E.
The food was great with the price. The only thing is don't ever use the restroom unless it's necessary
(3)Kris K.
Great service and friendly staff. It's been the place I go out to breakfast since 2010. Try the Gawdawful.. Fantastic!
(5)Brittney N.
Hole-in-the-wall is right, and we loved it. It looks to be family owned and operated, which we also love. We came on a Sunday afternoon, and when we arrived there were still several open tables to choose from, but by the time we left, it was becoming standing room only. I don't know what this place is like during peak hours, but I probably wouldn't want to find out. We ordered the Round House and an Omelet whose name escapes me at the moment, but which had veggies, cheese, bacon, and ham. My favorite part were the hash browns. They were a good combination of crispy bits with this oddly fantastic chewiness. The sausage was also a winner, the casing had a crisp snap to it and the insides were juicy and soft. The Omelet was alright, nothing extraordinary, but full of cheddar cheese just the right size. There were several large slices of tomato (not my favorite) that weren't listed on the menu. Also... They don't have decaf coffee... Just in case you are into that sort of thing. Overall, we enjoyed our experience and would definitely return... Hopefully on a day when nobody else is there. Oh yeah, and the prices are decent, under $10 a person ish.
(4)R W.
Super fast and friendly service combined with prices that are easy on the pocket book makes this place a super choice. The potstickers are really good. They are house made then deep-fried and served with a thicker soy-based sauce. I've never had a deep-fried potsticker before but they were tasty. The pancakes were really good too. Light and fluffy but with a nice outer crust. I had the spicy chicken noodle bowl. It reminded me of Top Ramen soup with sriracha sauce, snow peas and chicken.
(3)Laurie B.
The best part of Big Ed's . . . well, the best two parts. A) It's the closest eatery that serves beer near the University of Utah. B) Despite the closeness and cheapness of it's patrons, the menu has delicious, affordable food, INCLUDING breakfast all day! Amazing! I have actually only ever ordered beer, breakfast, or fries from Big Ed's, but it's a cool space in a convenient place. Be warned that it's very small so seating is often a puzzle but it's worth a visit at least a few times throughout the semester.
(4)Curtis C.
My earlier made prediction was correct, the Gawd Awful makes this a 4. That was some great food!
(4)Victoria E.
My breakfast was great and more than what I thought I was going to be. My eggs were perfect. Bacon was yummy and I got a lot. Six pieces. Crispy just like I like it and hash browns. Great!!! Could have used some salt. Or they should consider giving salt with order. But not really a complaint. I know where I am heading when I want breakfast while at work!!
(3)Jim L.
One of the few happy memories of my college days. Best chili burgers in the world and classic coffee. I wish it were closer to where I live or work.
(4)Paul W.
The food was okay, if a bit bland. The portions were large. At no point did I think, "yum!" Just...meh. If you've never been there, I still might recommend that you go at least once. It is a bit of a trippy, eclectic dive run by a loud Asian couple who are routinely entertaining. I'm guessing it is a beloved hangout of the college crowd because I can't see why anyone would go back.
(3)Rolando P.
Looking for a breakfast place and stumble at Big Eds. Family owned place. I ordered the french toast with eggs and bacon. I got 4 bacon strips :) The eggs and french toast were fine, like at any other breakfast place. The place has an eclectic intimate feel. If you don't like close quarters this is not a place for you. I will come again.
(4)Karl N.
I grew up in the aves and would drive by this place almost every day. Always thought it was just a bar. But it is not. It's quirky cozy and wonderful place for food. Portions are ample and delicious. And I must say that after 7 years in the Bay Area walking into an Asian family owned restaurant makes me feel like I could take a trip up north and get me some oysters. I miss the tight knit family restaurants.
(5)BJ H.
I eat at a lot of places and this is one of my top five. I love the place and what it is. The food is like anything you would get at Denny's or Dees only better. You can also can get one of the best spicy noodle bowls in the city. Fresh coffee, cold beer and Christmas lights! What's better.
(4)Jeeper W.
I have been coming here for a little over 16 years. I moved to SLC to go to school in 1998 and lived just around the corner for about 5 years. I sometimes came here 2 to 3 times a day. The family that runs it is so sweet and she always remembers me no matter how busy they are. The food is exactly what you would expect from a small diner, delicious. I always get bacon and eggs and I love it here. I recommend to anyone. They have great chile and pot stickers and burgers and beer.
(5)Andrew S.
Burger and fries. 3.75. What else can I say? In all seriousness, this place is a real dive. It's a no windows, pictures papering the walls, handwriting on the pictures, bar and dingy tables kinda place and they sell a damn good burger and fries for $3.75. Damn good for this kind of place, let's be clear. I don't want any emails or messages telling me I am crazy in the head. I am not comparing it to Copper Onion, Pago or even Smashburger for God's sake. I am comparing it to dingy bar kinda places where the wife runs the kitchen and the husband does the dishes and a college kid takes your order. This place is packed for lunch when the U is in session. Be prepared. There is a good reason why it is packed. Practically on campus and the burger and fries is 3.75. Yup. Go. Try it. You will be happy. If you're not, you aren't comparing it to the right kind of place.
